Aust Masters Road Championships 2011

A few weeks ago Maria Propseri was out on a training ride when a fellow Illawarra Cycle Club member commented on how strong she was riding and asked her if she had thought of going down to Ballarat for the Australian Masters Road Championships. Having only been involved in cycling for two years and not having ever raced in a State Open she asked a few of the other Club members what they thought, it was unanimous, she should give it a go.
At the Championships last weekend Maria was awarded the Champion of Champions for the Women’s Masters 3 division after winning both the Criterium and the Road Race. What was even more impressive was that the WM3 races were combined with the WM1 and WM2 and that she won the combined Criterium Race and was third in the combined Road Race.
Her performance was exceptional as she had not been doing any specific training for the events.
Prosperi didn’t race the Time Trial event because she hasn’t got a time trial bike but that may have to be remedied in the future. She has incredible drive and ability so her potential at this stage is unknown but we are sure that she will be winning a lot more races. She thanked Paul Oysten for the training program and her training partner Mark Malloy.
In her Criterium she continually found herself driving the bunch for at least half the race, no real breakaways were attempted. With about 1 1/4 laps to go she basically had to sit up and stop pedalling to get someone else to go around her. With about 300m to go she was sitting on 2nd wheel and was boxed in when a small gap opened, she went straight through the middle and sprinted for the line winning by about half a wheel.
Her Road Race conditions were fairly harsh. Rain, fog, strong winds and freezing cold, only 9 degrees, it wasn’t much fun. For the first 2 laps only Properi and 5 others did rolling turns with the rest of the bunch sitting on. There were quite a few breakaway attempts tried, a couple by Prosperi, with no luck the wind was too gusty. About 3km out from the finish on the final lap the pace picked up to about 45 km an hour, with an attempted breakaway every 200m or so. 500m out she was in perfect position for the sprint finish only to get completely boxed in with nowhere to go, she braked heavily and went out the back of the bunch then came around the right hand side and sprinted for the line thinking that it was too easy only to then realise she had judged the line wrong and there was still over 100m to go. She thought she had blown it but got out of the saddle and drove as hard as she could and to her surprise won the race!
Illawarra’s other entrant at the Nationals was Scott Butler. After many years off the bike he returned to the sport last year. He said that last year he reacquainted his body to the rigours of training and getting back into racing and that this year he wanted to reach the top levels of the sport.
His first big hit out was at the State Men’s Masters 3 Time Trial Championships where he won the silver medal. So he went down to the Nationals with high expectations in the Men’s Masters 3 division.
The ITT course was pretty fast and mostly flat so a quick time was obviously going to be necessary to win. Competition came from Qld (Andrew Patten, Gold) and Nowra's Damian Mason (silver) who had ridden the course the year before. In the high class field he was pleased with the bronze.
It was a good Criterium circuit around Victoria Park which was predominately flat and therefore very fast. His plan was to
go from the gun and his roommate Mason followed within the first lap. The two of them built up a good gap and maintained it until about 3/4s into the race when they were joined by a 4 man group. They continued to pull away and cruised to the finish. In the 5-up sprint, Butler timed his run well but Mason swung across and he clipped his wheel but still managed 3rd. His road race was a little disappointing in so much that his attempts to breakaway early failed, but Mason’s break succeeded. Rather than chase him, he suggested that the others might have a go, but they gave Mason and Korn Sietsma an unassailable gap on the second lap (of 5) and they easily won by near 2 minutes. Butler finish 4th in the sprint. Butler had a successful National Championships with 2 bronze medals and a 6th place in the road race. He was fourth in the M3 Champion of Champions competition on 4 points, second and third were equal on 5 points so it was extremely close.
