Welcome To Illawarra Cycle Club

The Illawarra Cycle Club is located in Wollongong on the South Coast of New South Wales Australia. The Club holds Road Cycle Race meetings almost every week of the year. During the Summer, Velodrome Racing is also promoted at the Unanderra Velodrome on the Princes Highway.

The Club is for participants for all levels. There is no need to be Robbie McEwen or Cadel Evans on the first day you come out to the Club. We have 4 Grades ranging from those that are there to compete and attain the highest level in the sport, to those that are out for some fitness and enjoy the social aspect of the day.

All the members of the Club will welcome new riders and assist new members with various aspects of racing whether it be on the Velodrome at Unanderra or out on the Road course at West Dapto (Avondale Rd). Several riders have ridden at international level and have much advice and experience to pass on to those aspiring to dothe same and to those that want to be able to ride better at Club level.

So if you have a bike, enjoy riding it, enjoy talking to people, and perhaps would like to try a little competition in a friendly environment, come along and join in the fun.

Illawarra Cycle Club is proudly supported by Frank Soto & Associates

Club Championships Time Trial 10 July

18.5 Km

Is a Mtn Bike faster than a roadie?

How much time can you expect to shave using aero bars?

Can you ride a TT with cleats about to fall off?

Is it worth warming up on a trainer?

How much time do you lose over 10 years?

Can you ride a TT with a single 88inch gear?

You can find out the answers to these perplexing questions, plus more, if you turn up to an ICC Time Trial.

The weather was perfect for TTing. Barely a wisp from the north. Those warming up on trainers at the start were overheating!

Times were good, but not outstanding. Chris Brown rode the Fastest Time in 27:01 on a new TT bike that he built himself, frame up. Craig Paul once again scored 2nd fastest time, with Mark Jewel 3rd. Hans got one back on Lou Caruana by some 30seconds this time. Now this was a remarkable achievement as his cleats almost fell off. One just hanging on with 1 bolt. In the carpark Hans was seen to lend Allen keys to the Waratah visitor, Rod. Pity he didn’t use them himself!

Terry Welsh once again showed that he still has much room for improvement by beating his last time by 2 minutes and actually bettering his time of 10 years ago according to Vince. This he put down to the use of clip-on aero bars. There you go, roughly 2 minutes for 20km saved using aero bars.

Jeff Gray thought that TT meant ‘Tough Terrain’ and fronted on his Mountain Bike and was perfectly placed in the bunch to get a 33:06 !! What ! That no one passed him was a feat in itself. So there you have it, the record has been set for Mtn Bike TT.

Age Group placings can collect their prizes at next year’s Presentation Night.

The new Marshall System appears to be going well, with a full team working well under Peter Evans.

Next Week is the 2 Day Tour. Big numbers are expected in all grades. See you there.
